If you want to print only what you see in Outline View at that moment, click
Print[Immediately] (must use the default printer icon on the standard
toolbar, not File | Print...).

it's certainly possible to use File>Print from Outline View and
get a printout that resembles what I can see on screen (except
for margins).

Very likely it varies between versions, although my MacWord 2001 is ? to PC
word 2000. After some trial and error, the Print icon solution was what
worked for me, when all I wanted was to print out the headings, not any body
text. I tried and failed to find a setting in File | Print that would work.
Not sure if printer driver would make a difference (some let you check
Preview after the print command, some don't).

Um, not quite clear on what you are asking. When in Outline View,
Print[Immediately] prints what I see on the screen (to whatever headings I
have set), File | Print prints the entire document.
At least that's what I found before, last time I wanted to print headings
only--I hadn't realized it was possible at all until seeing a post from
Klaus Linke, and using the Print[Immediately] icon was the only way I could
get it to work, after getting a bit frustrated. Since this sounded odd to
so many people, I just now re-checked it, and now File | Print from Outline
View prints only what I see. I wonder what I was doing differently before?
(the obvious answer, that I didn't have the doc set to headings only, I'm
quite positive is not the case, but now I am really perturbed)

Suzanne S. Barnhill said:I suspect this behavior may have changed, as it has always been my
understanding (untested) that you could only print directly (using the
FilePrintDefault button) from Outline view. If you switch to Print Preview,
you don't see the outline, and I would expect what you see in Print Preview
to be what would print if you used the Print dialog. Hmm.
