Outlook 2000 hogs processor

On Win 98 SE I upgraded recently to Outlook 2000 SP3 from
Outlook 98. Now whenever I have Outlook running the
processor fan is on at high speed indicating heavy
processor cycle use. This is very noisy, and won't go off
even I have not touched the computer in hours. No disk
activity is indicated. The monitor does power off as it
should but the HDD does not.

I have Outlook in IMO mode and it is not set up to do any
background tasks, not even auto-archive or calender
reminders. Mail delivery is manual (no auto-check for mail
at the POP3 server). So Outlook should be doing nothing if
I just have it running in the background. Instead it
triggers that high speed fan every time, and will not let
the laptop go into low power mode (dead screen and HDD
powered down). As soon as I shut Outlook the fan shuts
down and the laptop will go into low power mode after 5
min.

Any suggestions? Why is Outlook using so many processor
cycles doing nothing? Thanks, please email me I am not a
