Outlook 2000 'hungapp' error

D

DaveP72

I am using Office 2000 on XP. Everying was working fine on Friday evening but
turned on computer this morning and Outlook 2000 has suddenly started
crashing for no reason. All other programs seems to be working ok.

The program opens ok, but if I click on a folder or click send/receive to
check for emails, the program freezes.

After pressing CTRL,ALT+DEL to get into the Task Manager it says 'Program
Not Responding', so I quit the program and the error log says the following;

szAppName : OUTLOOK.EXE szAppVer : 9.0.0.2416 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

I have done a complete virus scan and spyware scan of the hard drive but
nothing was detected.

I have the original Office installatin CD and I have tried the Repair Office
function to see if that would fix the problem but it hasn't made any
difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to get Outlook working again?

Any addins installed? Try starting outlook in safe mode - at start menu,
run, type
outlook.exe /safe
does it work correctly?

Hello Diane, I tried running in safe mode but I get exactly the same error.

I am not sure how to if I have any addins installed - my Windows updates are
set to automatic, would this keep Office up to date as well?

I'm not sure if office 2000 updates are on Microsoft update.

for addins, go to tools, options, other, advanced - addins and com addins
will show what is installed.

Smooth Top

I too have a similar issue. I have upgraded to Xp but still have Outlook2000.
When I open Outlook it will close itself after a minute or so, if there is no
activity.

OK, managed to check what Add-Ins are installed.

-Net Folders

Are you actually using Net Folders? That's been obsolete for yearws and
never worked well when it was supported. If you have no need of it, remove
it.
-Redemption Helper Outlook Extension

and COM Add-Ins:
-GroupMail 5 Outlook Add-In

Are you connecting to something called "GroupMail"? If not, remove this.

Hello Brian,

I have removed the GroupMail add-in.

The 2 other Add-Ins have tick boxes before there descriptions, both of which
are ticked. There is also a button marked 'install...'

I have unticked the box next to 'Net Folders'

Restarted program but Outlook is still crashing - should I try a reboot?

Try starting Outlook in safe mode. Click Start>Run and enter

outlook.exe /safe

in the Open field. Click OK. Be sure to include the space in the command.

Just tried Safe mode again, but it didn't work.

I also tried Start > Run
chkdsk c: /f

Rebooted to check for disk errors after start up - didn't find anything.

I also tried running 'scanpst.exe' program against the 'outlook.pst' file. I
left it running through the night as the .pst file is over 2GB in size. It
detected an error and attempted to repair the file, but the SCANPST program
itself errored half way through the process.

None of these things have made any difference. The Outlook program opens up
ok, but as soon as I click on a folder or click send/receive it hangs
(program not responding window comes up).

This is most likely your problem. Outlooks prior to 2003 can't have their
PSTs exceed about 1.8 GB without problems. Outlook 2002 will warn you when
you're approaching that limit, but I don't remember if Outlook 2000 would.
You should investigate this:

Thanks Brian,

The truncate tool and the repair tool fixed the problem. Although it has
stripped out of the email addresses in sent and received emails.

Thanks,
Dave
