Outlook 2000 inquiry

I am using Windows XP pro with Outlook 2000 for e-mail.
These are my questions:
1. Does Outlook 2000 need and/or receive any critical
updates included with Windows Updates?
2. If I wanted to update to Outlook 2002 do I need to buy
the CD for it or can I find it on line and install it
over the version I now have?
3. If I wanted to go into Outlook/tools/accounts and add
another account for this newsgroup (microsoft community
newsgroup) how would I go about this (step-by-step
instructions) and also would it interfere with the
Outlook program when sending and receiving e-mail?

That's all.. Any help would be great.

1) Yes, Outlook's security is very much affected by Windows Update patches,
especially those for Internet Explorer.

2) It is not available as a download. You might find a copy of Office XP or
Outlook 2002 by hunting for it, but the current version is Office
2003/Outlook 2003.

3) You would start Outlook Express, which is the built-in newsreader, not
Outlook. They are two separate programs. If you don't install any mail
accounts, they won't interfere with each other.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and answering
my inquiry questions. It was greatly appreciated.

In addition to what Sue said, there are also separate updates to
Outlook/Office on the Office web site. Some are security updates not
included in the Windows Update site because they don't apply to Windows in
general, only Office or one of the Office components like Outlook.

Brian: Thanks for your help. Could you give me the Office
web site that includes Outlook 2000 for the separate
updates so I could read it to make sure I have all
necessary updates for Outlook 2000? I do have all the
critical updates for windows. I just need to make sure my
Outlook is also updated with all it needs. Thank you.

Sue, thanks for getting back to me. I went to the
http://office.microsoft.com site and did a scan to see if
I needed any updates. It told me that my computer needed
the Office 2000 service release 1a-English version 134MB.
I am using Windows XP Pro with Office Pro and Outlook
2000. Is there a way I can read up on this update to see
exactly what it is? Waiting to hear back from you and
thanks.....

Forgot one thing. I did some reading after sending below
post (should have read before). Regarding the update it
is telling me I need it shows it is a 1a. How do I know
if I have the Microsoft Outlook 2000 Service-release 1. I
believe that I would need this before the 1a? Right? and
will this change the way my outlook 2000 now works? My
Outlook 2000 is for e-mail only and is version
9.0.0.2711. I also went into the
www.slipstick.com/outlook/o12000.htm site. Found an
update I might need but not sure. One is the Outlook
security update 9.0.0.4201. Don't know if I can use this
as my version is lower. Any help would be great and sorry
to be so bothersome, but I like to know before I do
anything, exactly what I am putting on computer.

No, SP1 and 1a are the same thing. 1a made a very slight installation
change.
