Outlook 2000 - new e-mails indicator

I am using outlook 2000 here at work. When I go to the outlook window, new
e-mails are not indicated until I click on the folder icons. Also, the new
e-mail indicator tray icon does not appear until I click on a folder.
Internal e-mails do not have this problem.

If I send an e-mail to myself, the new e-mail is indicated properly.

Any suggestions?

Win xp pro, sp 2
Office 2000 SR-1
