Outlook 2000 runtime error

K

Karen

I am trying to run Outlook/2000 under a new XP system.
The first time I start Outlook after logging on, I get a
MX Visual C++ runtime library error looking for
outlook.exe. The second time I start Outlook, it runs
fine.

The Dell Support line told me that I had to reinstall XP
to solve the problem but couldn't explain why that would
help.

It appears that something is generating a Outlook.exe
module in Windows\prefetch. When I rename that module, I
seem to get one "free" successful first start after logon.
If I log off and then logon a second time, the problem
reoccurs.

I'm having exactly the same problem. A new Dell with XP
Home. I installed Office 2000 and get that runtime error
the first time I start up Outlook; it occurs on each
account on the computer.

I've seen no responses to anyone who's posted this problem
in this news group or under Outlook/General. Have you
tried reinstalling XP as Dell suggests or removing and
reinstalling Office?

I'm going to try a reinstallation of Office then try an
upgrade for XP Home to XP Pro.

Let me know how you make out and I'll do the same.

I have tried reinstalling office. I have no intention of
reinstalling XP--I've spent too much time getting to
where I am.

Dell cannot explain to be how reinstalling XP will solve
the problem. Last problem I had (Support and Help did
not work at all) the first 3 calls and emails were
answered with a "reinstall XP". On the 4th call, I got
someone who told me Dell had incorrectly installed
something (for just a two week period) and all I needed
to do was to erase and extra .exe file.

I have sent a message to Microsoft and to Dell. No
response so far. If I hear anything, I will let you know.

I finally got to the RIGHT guy in Dell Support. The
problem is in the Symantec (Norton) anti-spam toolbar.
He told me to search for a module called MSOUPLUG.DLL and
to rename it MSOUPLUG.DLL.OLD. That solved the problem.

It seems that the first answer from Dell to all problems
is "reinstall XP".

Anyway. Good luck. Let me know if it works for you.

Karen,

It worked like a charm. I hope you got Mr. Right's phone
number. Thanks again.

Joe
