Outlook 2001 and Exchange 2003 Connection Problems

Hi,

I am having a strange connection problem in a mixed Windows/MacTCP/IP
network with an Exchange Server 2003 / Windows 2003 AD infrastructure
istalled.

The Mac client with (OS X 10.3) can ping the exchange server and there are
no filtered TCP ports between the machines; however, if I start Microsoft
Outlook 2001, (in OS 9 emulation) and I try to configure a mailbox, the
software can't find the exchange server, even if I try to edit the HOSTS
file or if I fill the SERVER field of the Outlook with the IP ADDRESS of the
exchange server.

If I connect with a Windows XP PC to the same ethernet port, with the same
IP address, I can see the server and I am prompted for USR and PWD.

Should I set any parameter in the Exchange Server / Windows Server or is it
a problem of the Mac OS?
Maybe it is a problem of licensing?

Could anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks in advance
Francesco Tomasi

Hi all,

I believe I am having the same problem on my network. Current configuration
is:

iMac workstations
Mac OS 9.2.2 or 9.2.x or 9.1.x
Outlook 2001 Mac
Exchange Server 2003 running on Windows Server Premium 2003

I am noticing an intermittent problem between workstations. The machine I
am writing this post on seems to work just fine with multiple profiles
connecting to the exchange server. however i noticed that if i use the ip
number for the exchange server parameter it works best. some machine will
receive an error message after trying to connect via the name/pwd dialog
that states the server cannot be found work offline or retry.

Does anyone have any information about this issue? Or perhaps other places
to look for reference?

thanks in advance,
Steve Nickerson

The best way to make Outlook 2001 to work seamlessly under Classic Mode in
Mac OS X, is to make it work in Mac OS 9, while booted under Mac OS 9.
Connection problems using Exchange Server name can be resolved by using
suggestions in the article below:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298781&Product=outmac

I have noticed that generally, installing Outlook 2001 on Mac OS 9 partition
or while booted thru Mac OS 9 makes it work seamlessly under Classic Mode in
Mac OS X without making any modifications there.

Outlook 2001 depends heavily on your DNS Server configuration to resolve
names for machines out there on your network. Make sure you are also
pointing these Mac client machines to proper DNS Servers out there (TCP IP
Control Panel) for proper name resolution. In a properly configured DNS
environment, Outlook 2001 works fine with no problems.

If you still experience connection issues, then move your Mac client machine
in the same subnet (I would suggest connect it to the same network tap where
your Exchange Server is connected) to see if you still experience the same
issue, if not then it could be due to the hardware in use on your network,
like routers, etc. as generally they are configured keeping in mind the PC
based hardware/software.

In the very last unfortunate case you have the option to put HOSTS file to
resolve this issue as discussed in the article above.

Hope this helps.
