Outlook 2001: "end of file reached" error

J

Jacqueline

We were running Speedisk when it hung part way through the process. Ever
since, every app on my OS 8.X machine works except Outlook 2001. I get
"end of file reached" error message during launch and then the application
quits. We have reinstalled Outlook twice, but to no avail.

How can we fix this problem?

Hi,

Are you using Outlook 2001 or Outlook Express(OE)?

If its OE - you can proceed as mentioned below...

Generally, we get the "The end of file was reached" error message only
in OE if the OE database is corrupt. In some situations,
the data may be seriously damaged, so we can't recover the data any
longer.

Plan

=========

Before the steps below, please backup the Documents:Microsoft User
Data:Identities folder. Outlook Express saves all data in this folder.

Plan One
-----------

Try a typical rebuild of the database. Press OPTION while starting
Outlook Express 5. You receive the following message:

Would you like to compact the database?

Click Yes to perform typical rebuild. If the problem persists,
continue with
the next step.

Plan Two
-----------

If the typical rebuild of the database can't solve this problem,
remove all
preferences files and perform an advanced rebuild of the database.

1. Trash the Trash the Preferences:Outlook Express Prefs file.

2. Open the Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities. Each subfolder
of the
Identities folder represents an identity in Outlook Express.

3. Move the corrupt Outlook Express identity folder to Desktop.

4. Create a new folder under Identities folder.

5. Copy the file that is named "Database" from the corrupt identity
folder to
this folder.

6. Perform an advanced rebuild of the new identity:

a. Press OPTION while starting Outlook Express 5. You receive the
following
message:

b. Would you like to compact the database?

c. Click No, you receive the following message:

Would you like to do a complex rebuild of the database?

d. Click Yes to do a complex rebuild of the database.

If the problem persists, I'm sorry to tell that the database is
seriously
corrupted. However, the second plan is the most powerful method to
recover a corrupt database currently. If this step doesn't work, the
message and contacts can't be recovered. Follow the steps below to
create an empty identity for Outlook Express so that you can use
Outlook Express properly.

1. Trash the Open the Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities folder.
2. Start Outlook Express.

A default identity is created, and Outlook Express should be working
now.

Best Regards,
S.R. Prashanth
