Outlook 2001 Office 98 attachment corruption

Since there is plenty of articles being posted with problems and only
some have "solutions".

Here is an expereience I've had and the resolution:

After about 6 months, $250 and about a 500 hours of server updates,
server maintenance, server database checks, outlook updates, office
updates, changing settings, and setting up test servers and computers,
I finally get a Microsoft engineer that knows his stuff. Apparently
the problem with Mac Excel attachments getting corrupt when sending
was caused by Office 98 not putting the correct "file type"
information in the file when it got sent out. It's a software bug
that's not going to be fixed since Office 98 is so old and a simple
"upgrade" to Outlook 2001 doesn't fix it either. You have to wipe the
machine out and start over and do a fresh install of OS9 & Office 2001
without Office 98.

I hope this helps someone so they don't go through the hassle that I
went through! I was determined to get an answer out of Microsoft and
finally did. Now I'm passing the information along to those of you who
may need it.
