[Outlook 2002 Bug "Leave a copy of messages on the server" doesn't work]
v
i.e., I want Outlook to leave mail on server, but it ignores the checked box
for "Leave a copy of messages on the server" when accessing mail via
pop3 and pop3s. I can verify this by watching the mail spool go empty on
the mail server while checking a pop3 account with an Outlook. Is
there a solution?

The following problem has been verified on 2 boxes running
MS Outlook 2002/XP with either its Office service pack 2 or its
Office service pack 3 installed while accessing e-mail via
pop3 or pop3s [encrypted] e-mail accounts.
v
Under menu "tools", E-mail accounts, view-or-change-
existing-account, change, more settings, advancedTab
clicking the box for "Leave a copy of messages on the server"
does not work. i.e., it is verified to remove all messages
from server *anyway* as soon as they are downloaded.
That feature worked in Outlook 97 and 2000.
v
That feature is required for users who want to
synchronize INBOXs stored on their <at home> and
<on campus> computers..

I've never encountered that. Do you have more than one account, by chance?

Nor have I. As Brian asks, are you sure that there isn't another client or
another account in your profile that is deleting the messages? If you are,
could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment) after this happens?

I was in error. "Leave copy of messages on server" *does*
work as expected when accessing mail via pop3 and pop3s.
v
In UNIX speak, me watching the mail spool empty out was not
relevant. In my case, when the account was checked via pop3
or pop3s, the mail spool [mbox format] did empty, but it was just
being moved over from to the UW-IMAP mbx format INBOX.
v
.. . .sorry about the goose chase.
