Outlook 2002 hangs on send/receive

I've been running Outlook 2002 under Windows XP for years with no problems,
however, recently Outlook has been hanging either during or right after a
send/receive (pulling mail off one POP account). Sometimes it hangs during
the send/receive, sometimes when trying to open or delete an email, sometimes
not at all. Task Manager shows Outlook as "Not Responding". I have to end the
task or click the red X in the top right corner and then restart Outlook.
Everything is then fine until I send/receive again (which I always do
manually). I have tried deleting a file (as recommended in another post)
which Outlook then recreates upon restarting (can't remember which one,
sorry) but that doesn't seem to make any difference. This is driving me
crazy. Thanks for your help!

Have you tried starting Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe")?

Have you tried disabling the e-mail scanner in your anti-virus program?

Thanks, I'll try those. Does that mean (if it works) that I'll have to run
Outlook in safe mode forever?

It means that it's likely you have an add-in that's interfering.

OK, so far Outlook seems to be working fine now. How do I find the add-ons,
and determine the "bad" one.?

Click Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options. You'll see both "Add-in
Manager" and "COM Add-ins". click each and disable anything you see. Then
start Outlook normally and enable them one-by-one. You should be able to
find the one that causes the problem.

Well, I only had two add-ins: Plaxo and Google Search Toolbar. First I
tried leaving Plaxo and unchecking Google Search. When I restarted Outlook I
got an error message just trying to do a send/receive. So, I have now kept
Google and unchecked Plaxo. Seems to be working, so Plaxo may be the
culprit. I'll leave another message if anything changes. Otherwise, the
conclusion is: Plaxo is incompatible with Outlook 2002

Plaxo has a well-known history for causing problems in Outlook.
