Outlook 2002 hangs when sending emails

I have trouble with Outlook 2002 more often than not when sending emails as
the message hangs until I forcibly end the program. It goes through phases of
working ok then for some reason, it fails. Does not normally have any error
message but I tried to forward a message to my hotmail account and the
following error appeared

Task 'mail.##########.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable
to send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account
properties. The server responded: 550 This is a submission only port. You
must authenticate before sending mail'

It is getting too temperamental and I am wondering if anyone has similar
issues?

Thanks Jocelyn, have mucked around with it and fixed the error message. Still
not confident as to whether outlook will still play up so will keep searching
I guess.

If you still have the hangs, try opening Outlook in Safe Mode and if it
doesn't hang in Safe Mode, you may have an add-in that is misbehaving - Safe
Mode disables add-ins. To use Safe Mode, close Outlook, click the Windows
Start button, click Run, then type in the box "outlook.exe /safe" (without
the quotes).
