Outlook 2002 - Messages Not marked read

Office XP
Outlook 2002 SP2

My messages are sometimes not marked as read after I have opened and
read them. Any ideas?

This depends on your settings. Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button Preview

I am not using a preview pane, but here are my settings...

Not enabled
Mark messages read in preview window

Enabled
Mark item as read when selection changes
Single key reading using space bar
