Outlook 2002: New message forces Outlook window on top

In Outlook 2002 (on a networked computer at work), newly
arrived messages are interfering with my work. If I am in
Word or Internet Explorer when a new message arrives,
Outlook instantly becomes the active window...even if I'm
in the middle of typing something.

How can I prevent Outlook from being so pushy? I've
scoured Tools>Options without success.
