Outlook 2003 Automatically Assigning Label

I am using Outlook 2007 at home and Outlook 2003 at work. I frequently take
appointments from home and import them at work. At home, I have categories
set up to automatically color code. At work, I also have the categories set
up so that it will use automatic labeling to change the color of my
appointments.

Sometimes when at work (Outlook 2003), but not always, when I open an
appointment in the PST that contains my home appointments, the appointments
have a label assigned. Yet, the label has nothing to do with the category
that I have assigned to the appointment. This causes the appointment to be
incorrectly color coded on my work calendar.

Any ideas on why this happening?

Labels and categories are unrelated in Outlook 2003. In Outlook 2003, color
is controlled by label. In Outlook 2007, color is controlled by Category. If
you want them consistent across the two versions, choose your label color in
Outlook 2003 to match the category color in Outlook 2007. For example, in
Outlook 2003, the label "Personal" is associated with a green color. Assign
the "Personal" category to it and on Outlook 2007, modify the name of the
"Green" category to "Personal". Another example would be if you wanted the
category "Vacation" to be, say, yellow. In Outlook 2003, assign the
"Vacation" category and choose the "Phone Call" label. In Outlook 2007,
assign the name "Vacation" to the "Yellow" category.

But here's the deal... In OL 2007, I have the category "Work" and assigned
it the color blue. In OL 2003, I have the category "Work". I also set up the
Automatic Labeling so that when the category is "Work" it assigns the blue
label to it (which I had renamed to "Work" as well).

What's happening is that when I bring that appointment from OL 2007 into OL
2003, it is lchanging the label for the appointment to green, which is
"Personal". As soon as I remove the label and set the label back to "None",
the automtatic labeling takes over and the appointment shows up as blue
since the category is "Work".

How are you "bringing" it? I can't repro it when I access the same mailbox
from outlook 2003 and 2007 - it works as expected - the Work category is
colored blue in 2007 and uses the blue label in 2003.

that is on a thumb drive and show the calendars for both PSTs side-by-side
so I can see any differences. I then drag/copy from the home PST to the
thumb drive PST. I close the thumb drive PST and then take it to work. At
work, I open up the thumb drive PST and compare it to my calendar at work,
which is in OL 2003 using Exchange. Usually I can see the label/color issue
in the thumb drive PST file before I even copy it over the OL 2003 calendar.
There is no rhyme or reason as to what events it is doing this with as it
does not do this with all of them.

Is the view available on the Exchange server? Automatic formatting is done
using a view and views are generally stored in the root folder for access in
all folders. If you are just moving appointments between pst and mailbox,
you aren't moving views. if the view is available (and applied) on both
computers, it works correctly.

Is there a reason why you are using a thumbdrive instead of RPC over HTTP
(Outlook Anywhere) at home?

Is that the same as Outlook Webaccess? If so, I do have access to my work
calendar from home that way. The problem is that I am trying to keep my work
and home calendars in synch (and unfortunately my work is not very helpful
in this respect as we can't install any hardware or software there, thus my
previous solution of synching my IPAQ at work and home no longer works). So,
I came up with the PST file on the thumb drive. I keep that one up-to-date
and just copy changes at work and home to it and then copy the changes at
the other site--not high tech, but it gets the job done.

As for the view, I am using the standard Day/Week/Month with Preview view
for the calendar on both the work calendar and the thumb drive calendar. As
I stated, it's strange that the automatic formatting appears to take affect
on the thumb drive PST before I even copy the appointments over to the work
calendar.

No, its not the same as OWA. Outlook Anywhere is a feature of Exchange 2003
and 2007 - when configured for Outlook Anywhere you can use Outlook 2003 or
2007 to access the server across the internet securely.

The thumb drive at work will use the same view as the folders at work. At
home, it uses the view you have at home, which does not include the
automatic formatting rules. At home, go into customize views and check for
automatic formatting rules.
