Outlook 2003 Cached Mode Error

R

Reg

I recently switched Outlook 2003 over to cached mode,
residing on a fully-patched Windows XP laptop. We are
currently running Exchange 2000 in a Windows 2003 Server
mixed-mode domain. When starting Outlook, I frequently
(but not always) receive the message "The data file
[Mailbox - Reg] was not closed properly."

No error messages are received when exiting Outlook the
previous time, and Windows XP was shut down normally.

I've searched Google and only found 2 hits on this
subject, and none at Microsoft.com. Before I roll this
platform out to all employees, I'd like to figure out
what is going on with this error.

Thanks for any help you may provide.

Can you confirm that Outlook really does shut down when you close it? Does
the icon disappear from the systray? Can you launch the Task Manager and see
if Outlook.exe is still listed in processes? If so, your problem is Outlook
shutting down properly. If so, post back.

I shut Outlook down a couple of times, and both times the
icon disappeared from the systray and Outlook.exe
disappeared from system processes in Task Manager. I
also tried shutting my laptop down quickly after
exiting. However, these times, I NEVER received the
error that the data file was not closed properly. So, it
looks like an intermittent problem.

I guess I can monitor it everytime I shutdown Outlook.
However, if I do find Outlook.exe running an extended
period of time after exiting, do you know what causes
this? Possibly latency issues with Exchange?

Thanks for your quick reply!

It could stay running for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the more
common.

1. PDA. If you have a PDA connected to your computer using ActiveSync, it
actually opens a hidden instance of Outlook. So if that's causing the
problem, either undock your PDA or turn it off after you close Outlook.
2. Add-Ins: If you have any custom add-ins installed. Some common ones
include antivirus add-ins, anti-spam add-ins, or productivity add-ins. If
these are the problem you should contact the owner of these add-ins to see
if they know anything about their software causing Outlook to not shut down
properly.
3. Custom Forms: If you're using custom forms and the person who made them
didn't release all the variables (if there are any) in the code behind the
form, sometimes the custom form can keep Outlook running.

Thank you so much for your kind help. Based upon your
very insightful comments, I am suspecting that either the
McAfee AV add-in or the Brightmail anti-spam add-in is
causing the problem. I will contact both vendors and let
you know the outcome.
