Outlook 2003 can't send/receive

L

Larry A. Lovering

I use Outlook 2003 with a Netgear firewall/router and cable modem service.
Periodically, and I can't really tell the interval, Outlook 2003 gives the
"reported receiving an error" message on all accounts. This includes
servers outside the cable internet service provider's server.

I checked to see if the IP address from DHCP had changed, and that was no.
The only way I can recover from this is to reboot. And I have to do this
two to three times a day. This has only begun to happen in the last week or
so.

To recap, I reboot and all is well. Then after a period of time which could
be many hours, Outlook reports failure to send and receive on all accounts
(I check about 11 accounts each time.) I reboot, and it works.

Any suggestions?

Did you try any of the following:

1) restarting the modem
2) restarting just outlook (make sure it's closed completely in Task
Manager)
3) disabling and reenabling the NIC (control panel, Network connections)

Hi Diane,

I have tried all three things today. I am also leaving my Windows CE PDA
off the dock, where it is most of the time unless I am shutting down. But
the same problem, Outlook not being to access any of the account's servers
did happen again. Interestingly, I can access the Internet, so I believe it
isn't a routing issue, unless it is something specifically with ports 110
and 25. I am not using an internal (i.e. Windows XP) firewall, just an
outside one.

You said 11 accounts? Are they all pop3? How often are you checking for new
mail? With that many, I would try 10 min. minimum, more if they are all on
one server. Outlook is limited in how many accounts it can check at once and
if the time is too low, it's still checking when the time for the next pass
occurs and to can cause outlook to hang.

if it works correctly for a higher time, slowly lower it until it starts
hanging again - and move it a min or two higher.
