Outlook 2003 Contacts hangs after a couple of actions eg deleting 2 or 3
contacts.
Any suggestions how to correct the problem. Have Service Pack 1 installed
and all up to date.

I think it's probably connected with the ridiculous size of my contacts file
- around 1Gb. Now I can't access Outlook at all. Any suggestions on an escape
route?

If it's only at 1 Gb, it shouldn't be the problem. Have you checked your
Outlook Data File for errors with the Inbox Repair Tool?

I have a client using Outlook 2003 + Office Service Packs and connects
to Exchange 2000. The servers are all patched and he's running Windows
XP SP2 and all updates.

The outlook client, when opening non GAL contacts (and he's got hundreds
of them) will cause a fault in Outlook as follows:

Open contact, close contact, open next contact, close contact, repeat 15
times - it may restart outlook at contact #4 through #15, but it will
always fail. This happens on his laptop or workstation, both run the
same OS+SP and same versions of Outlook. It happens when Outlook is set
to cached or non-cached mode. I have even deleted the outlook profile
and recreated it and still have the fault.

The error can be produced when doing a REPLY to some emails, but it's
easier to duplicate with personal contacts. Removing the .Net framework
decreases the frequency of the fault, but does not eliminate it.

Error Signature:

I have searched for any clues and have reached the point where calling
MS for support is our next option.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Yes - used the repair tool and it indicated problems which I repaired. No
recovered or lost and found files generated.

Increase virtual memory as well just in case.

Outlook still hangs if I make 10-15 actions (eg deletions and mouse moves).

Ran repair tool again and this time no problems indicated.

Any chance it's a conflict with mouse drivers?

Doesn't sound like any Outlook issue I've ever seen. I'd look for
add-ins if I were you.

We have this exact same problem on two computers with the same logon
(domain user). We've removed and reinstalled Office 2003, updated,
etc... None of the other users (none of them use these machines) have
this problem, and I've never seen anything like it before (and I have
more than 1000 systems with this setup).

The systems in question runs MS SQL 2000, All Office Apps, Visio, .Net
Framework 1.1, Visual Studio .Net Enterprise 2003, IIS, FTP, Symantec
Small Business Edition 8.1 with Exchange Filter (as do most of our
machines), we removed Business Contacts Manager, Adobe Acrobat 6 (full
version), and a slew of other apps.

It seems that when I uninstalled .Net Framework the problem decreased,
but came right back strong when I reinstalled it.

The only clues I can find relate to Oracle Desktop (we're not running
it, never have) and .Net Framework (foreign site with a complaint like
ours).

If the client calls MS and gets this resolved I will post the resolution
they provide.

M

Mr Hare

Plaxo maybe.
One of the MS online support documents suggested the following:
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
1. In the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console
(MMC) snap-in, click the Users container, and then double-click the service
account user.
2. Click the Member Of tab.
3. Make sure that the service account is a member of the Domain
Administrators group.
4. If the service account is member of the Domain Users group only, click
Add, and then add the Domain Administrators group to the membership list.

Couldn't work out if this was useful though

Would appreciate if you find out more as it's really screwing me up at present.
What is .net framework - is that Microsoft?
I'll try restoring the system from a couple of weeks ago and see what happens.

Since he and I seen to have the same problem, although I've not seen him
post the error header info, I can assure you that this is not going to
fix it, all domain members are local admins on their workstations. The
client in question is also a domain admin, so that's out.

The .Net Framework is part of the newer MS methodology for programming
and interfacing with the system. It is used by Outlook if it's
installed, although Outlook runs without it installed.

Try creating a new domain account for the user, export their entire
email tree to a PST file and import it to the new account - I'll be
trying that later today.

M

Mr Hare

Plaxo looks the most likely culprit.

www.plaxo.com - online address book which replicates Outlook contacts and
does stuff
Lots of comments about crashes on their forum

This person is not using Plaxo, they have Exchange 2000 server, patched,
and Outlook 2003 (also patched) and if you open any contact from their
personal list up to 15 times it will crash Outlook. As a test, I can
replicate the error by selecting successive contacts by double clicking
on them and then pressing escape to close them, always, before the 15th
one, Outlook will crash and close.

Mr Hare

Answer from Plaxo follows.
Not a lot of help.
If I disable it any problems cease so there must be a glitch in there
somewhere.

With Plaxo enabled I can do what you do 20-25 times now. In company view if
I start deleting crash guaranteed.

Think I've got better things tyo do with my life so will sign off for now
but if you get a response from MS let me know.

Hello,

I am sorry about the experience you've had.

There are numerous reasons why Outlook can crash. However, many usually have
no direct relationship with Plaxo. However, in the cases where Plaxo can
cause Outlook to crash. See below for suggestions on how to prevent
this:

* Make sure that you are running the most current version of Plaxo: visit
http://plaxo.com/downloads. Then, click on the download button and complete
the download and installation. The download will detect that you already have
Plaxo installed and will upgrade you to the latest version.
* If you have an old version of McAffee VirusScan (e.g. 7.x), we also
recommend that you upgrade McAffee VirusScan to a more recent version.
* There are numerous known problems with Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft
Windows. Here's how you can check to make sure that you have the very latest
Office and Windows patches:

Microsoft Office (Outlook), visit this link:
http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

Microsoft Windows, visit this link:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

* There is a known bug in Outlook XP version 10.2627.2625 where the nickname
file can become corrupted, causing Outlook to crash. This problem exists
regardless of whether Plaxo is installed. Applying the Office service pack 1
(or later) will fix the problem. This service pack is available from the
following link:

http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx
If none of these help, please contact Plaxo Customer Care emergency support
by sending an e-mail using our webform at
http://support.plaxo.com/bin/request.py

I hope this helps. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Best regards,
Angela
