Outlook 2003 fax receipts

D

David

I am using Outlook 2003 (Beta 2 refresh) on Windows XP.
I am connecting to a Windows Server 2003 shared fax
device. When I send a fax from Outlook, I do not receive
a receipt no matter how the Fax Transport is configured
(single receipt, include attachment, etc.). I receive
the receipt if I send a fax using Create New Fax from the
Fax Console. The received faxes are properly forwarded
to the designated inbox.

I have removed and reinstalled the Fax Services on both
client and server machines. No change. I have looked
into the registry to find something that would disable
receipts. I could not find anything. I have used
another computer running Windows 2000 Pro and Outlook
2002 and it receives receipts just fine. Have I
inadvertently disabled the receipt feature within Outlook
or could this be a Outlook 2003 glitch? I thought for
sure the receipt feature was working from Outlook 2003 at
one point, but I can not be certain.

Maybe I'm not using the correct terminology. In Windows Server 2003, you
can send incoming fax messages through SMTP. The destination e-mail account
is what I referred to as the Inbox. In addition, it has the ability to send
receipts (send confirmations) to the sender's email address...also through
SMTP. I'm not getting these receipts when I use Outlook 2003 to send the
fax. When I send a new fax from the fax console, I get the receipts. The
fax console used in this case is for the Windows Server 2003 shared fax
device, not the native XP fax console.

To what Inbox are you referring? Windows XP Fax no longer integrates with

If you're getting fax messages in your Outlook Inbox, then that's behavior
I've never seen. It does not occur with the Win XP Fax client. I've never
had occasion to use the Win 2003 Shared Fax client, nor will I. I'll see if
the developers have any white papers on how it should integrate with Outlook
2003.

Outlook doesn't trigger the server to send out the send notification message

Outlook 2003 (registry setting or otherwise) that makes Outlook 2003 send
this trigger? If it is indeed a glitch, I hope it is corrected in the final
release.

The receipt feature is slightly different in outlook fax. When a fax is sent
from outlook to a windows server 2003 (with email receipts enabled). Fax
server automatically picks up the user's email address from the DC and sends
the receipt as an email. The only condition here is that user and the Fax
server should be in same domain.

Incase you are the only one user of the fax server, you can configure
Incoming routing in fax server to sent all faxes to your email address.

To what Inbox are you referring? Windows XP Fax no longer
integrates
with
Outlook's Inbox.

Not fixed yet. They're still working with the Outlook developers on it.

Having gone back to the non-cached mode, I realize how nice the cached
exchange mode is. Has the fax receipt problem been corrected in the final
release of Office 2003? I'd like to be able to go back to cached exchange
mode eventually.

Ah ha! That cured it. I thought I remembered it working correctly before.
Now that you mention it, I did change the setting to Use Cached Exchange
Mode and that is when the trouble started. Your help has been greatly
appreciated!

Another update on this. If you disable Use Cached Exchange Mode (you can
get there by Tools -> E-mail Accounts and clicking on Next button of E-Mail
Accounts dialog and Change button of Microsoft Exchange Server Account)
everything works fine.

I have heard from the fax developers, however, and they have found some
bugs
in the code for Outlook 2003 that result in the fields required for the
receipt delivery not getting filled in during sending the fax hence they
are
not getting the receipts. They're working on it.
fax
is
sent
from outlook to a windows server 2003 (with email receipts enabled).
Fax
server automatically picks up the user's email address from the DC and
sends
the receipt as an email. The only condition here is that user and the
Fax
server should be in same domain.

Incase you are the only one user of the fax server, you can configure
Incoming routing in fax server to sent all faxes to your email address.

No, I get the incoming fax messages. I just don't get the send
notifications when the fax is initiated by Outlook 2003. For some
reason,
Outlook doesn't trigger the server to send out the send notification
message
(Subject: Fax was successfully sent to...). Is there a setting
within
Outlook 2003 (registry setting or otherwise) that makes Outlook 2003
send
this trigger? If it is indeed a glitch, I hope it is corrected
in
the
final
release.

Correct. Routing of fax messages to Outlook 2003 is not supported.

Maybe I'm not using the correct terminology. In Windows Server
2003,
you
can send incoming fax messages through SMTP. The destination
e-mail
account
is what I referred to as the Inbox. In addition, it has the
ability
to
send
receipts (send confirmations) to the sender's email address...also
through
SMTP. I'm not getting these receipts when I use Outlook
2003
to
send
the
fax. When I send a new fax from the fax console, I get the
receipts.
The
fax console used in this case is for the Windows Server 2003
shared
fax
device, not the native XP fax console.

You're a bit ahead of the curve here.

I don't understand what you mean when you say,"I receive the
receipt
if
I
send a fax using Create New Fax from the
Fax Console. The received faxes are properly forwarded to the
designated
inbox."
