Outlook 2003 How do I save email messages?

L

laidebug

I keep email that I may need to refer back to i.e. problem solving an issue -
I keep the final email so if it comes up again, I don't have to rack my
brains again. Right now my email sits on a server and we need to keep our
Outlook "cleaned up", delete the delete files, delete the sent file
etc....the IS guy keeps giving me the stink eye because mine is so
big.........is there a way for me to save the emails (individually) on my
hard drive or in my alloted file on another server?

Sure, as a matter of fact you can drag and drop e-mail messages into any
folder you want on your hard drive. For instance open "My documents",
see the Icon on the Taskbar now? Simple drag an e-mail to that Icon, and
hold it there, My Documents will pop to the Desktop, now simply drop the
e-mail in My Documents.

Is there a way to move email folders from Outlook Express to an external
drive -- without having to move each individual message one at a time? Many
thanks.

Try posting this in an Outlook Express news group - this is not one of them.
Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office and is what this group supports.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and has its own news groups.

Yes, you need to move *all* the .dbx files.

Thank you for this advice. I'm new to the Microsoft news groups, so I
appreciate your pointing me in a direction. Incidentally, it's a mystery to
me how in the world the intro to my question, "after furious head
scratching...." got included. I didn't write that. I thought that intro
implied impatience with and/or disrespect for people who had replied in this
thread. Let the record show, I appreciate the help -- and respect the people
who offer it!

Thanks very much for your response. Your answer seemed to be the ticket.
However, I moved a .dbx email folder to the desktop, but then I couldn't open
the folder. When I tried to open it, I got an error message that said "no
locking handle" found. I attempted to open the folder after going through
the "open with" option and selecting Outlook Express. No luck. I selected
Internet Explorer. Still, no luck. It won't do me any good to move the
email folders if I can't open them later. Any solutions? Also, I couldn't
figure out how to move the .dbx folder to an external drive. How can that be
done? Many thanks.

You need to move all the .dbx folders and then import them into Outlook
Express using Outlook Express' File/Import. Once you've done that, you
can export to Outlook from Outlook Express if you so desire.

I really appreciate your help and patience. I have more questions. My goal
is to move only certain email folders from Outlook Express to a flash drive.
Is that possible? If so, how? When I move a .dbx email folder, I couldn't
figure out how to move it to any other place than the desktop. After I moved
it, I couldn't open it. Sorry to bother you for more info, but you've been
very helpful. I'd really like to be able to accomplish moving certain email
folders to a flash drive. Thanks very much.

If you don't move folders.dbx, you can't do anything with the others.

Thanks very much for your response. I still don't understand all the
specifics of how to accomplish my goal. Anyway, I appreciate your efforts to
clear my muddled mind.
