Outlook 2003 Junk email filter not working

H

Hal

Hello, I am stumped. No matter what level I set the filter all of a sudden
it has stopped working. Nothing is being caught. Any ideas? Thanks in
advance!

Hal.

Anyone? I even updated the filter to catching everything, the high level.
It will not stop anything. Everything goes into the main mailbox.

What type of account are you using?

If you mean email. Private ISP and other ones. I am in the tech field as
well. Nothing is wrong externally.

I mean "Exchange", "POP", or "IMAP".

Do you download the entire message in each account or only the headers?

The entire message. MS released a Junk mail update yesterday and it seems
to have fixed the problem on its own since then. Very Werid! Thanks
though.

Thanks though.

The main thing is that it's working again.

Outlook junk filter worked really well for me for years until 2 days ago. it
just stopped filtering. i haven't changed anything. but online search shows
other outlook users with same problem, e.g.,
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30419154/outlook-2003-junk-email.aspx.

my update history on update.microsoft.com gives these as my most recent
updates, from the past week:

- Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.20.2824.2)
- Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.20.2819.1)
- Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.20.2748.2)

and suggests that they can be removed using Add/Remove Programs. so i
thought that maybe this can be fixed just by removing these updates (if
that's a wise thing to do). but none of the above updates are even in my
programs lists, the most recent one being KB939373 on Jul 11th!

very frustrating. please help!

thanks,

While I'd be very surprised if a Windows Defender update had any effect on
Outlook, do you have the "Show Updates" box in Add or Remove Programs
checked?

yes, Show Updates is checked.

here's another one with the same problem where Outlook junk processing
worked flawlessly and then suddenly just stopped filtering, also sometime in
July. http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread1519-2.html

having nightmares that some spammer managed to turn off my junk filtering
and then went Muahaha!

I've been having the same problem. What works temporarily is to do a Repair.
(Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs, then choose to Repair. Then, a couple
of days or weeks later, it stops again. It's happened 4 times in the last
several weeks.

I just started having the same problem last week.

I had my filter set to throw EVERYTHING in the junk mailbox unless the
sender was in my Safe List...but that just suddenly stopped working. (It
happened on the same day I installed a MS software update for Office.) I
removed the update, but still, Outlook will not filter junk mail at any
setting. My custom rules are still working (at least as intermittently as
they ever did).

I had the same problem. I have Office on automatic updates, so I don't really
notice when they happen -- therefore, no idea if the problem happened after
updates. It's happened 4 times over the last 6 weeks or so. Each time, doing
a Repair (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Change, then choose Repair) fixed
the problem temporarily.

Interestingly, I tried the instructions that were given on fixing the rule
file (http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/fix_junk.htm), which involved deleted
the rule file, and there was no rule file! And, contrary to what was in those
instructions, closing and opening Outlook obviously didn't create one --
since the problem lasted for several days until I repaired Office.

Mine is now working, after the 4th repair and I'm trying to pay attention to
what I do -- and what happens automatically -- to see if I can catch anything
when it happens again.

By the way, I'm also getting e-mail inexplicably put into my Deleted Items
folder. I haven't figured out why that happens but I just check it every day.
Sigh!
