Outlook 2003 "mark as read" fails

Hello!

Using Outlook 2003 on WinXP Pro, a problem I noticed is that messages are
not marked as read when I view them in the reading pane until several
minutes after I have viewed them, if at all. It was set to the default 3
seconds to mark them as read, and I tried changing that up and down, to no
avail. They sometimes will not get
marked as read at all, no matter how long the message is displayed in the
reading pane. If I double-click the message and then close it, it gets
marked as read.

Any ideas?
