Outlook 2003 - not shutting down

last week I downloaded a MS auto update and I noticed my Outlook 2003 program
will not shut down when I close the program. It remains active, which is
indicated by the icon in the lower right corner, and continues to
automatically check for new messages. The only way I can get it to close
down completely is when I go to task manager / processes and click "end
process" for Outlook. How can I get the thing to close down normally again???

What happens if you load Outlook in its safe mode and retest exiting it?

outlook.exe /safe

Perhaps you have an add-on that is failing to unload when asking Outlook to
exit.

Also, just before exiting Outlook, how many instances of outlook.exe do you
see in the Processes tab of Task Manager? There should only be one.
