Outlook 2003 on XP (SP2) chronically hangs after opening

Using Office XP on XP Pro OS (SP2). Outlook 2003 opens OK, downloads
messages, but first access to a folder (try to read, purge junk mail, etc.)
results in hung CPU for at least 5 minutes. Can't open Excel or other
functional applications like Task Manager either. No apparent network
activity during hang; and no indication of what the CPU is doing.

I just finished installing SP2, so ran AdAware and cleaned out everything
along with the other prep recommended. Problem remains the same. Outlook
goes into non-responsive mode for some reason, and nothing else functional
can take place until it regains consciousness in about five minutes. Then
all the delayed windows open up at once.

CPU is doing something, but don't know what to monitor to find out what.
Doesn't show up as an application in Task Manager...

First, try adding Outlook to the firewall exception list. Next, try turning
off Instant Messaging integration at the bottom of Tools>Options>Other.
FInally, try renaming or deleting %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\Outcmd.dat
