Outlook 2003 processing forever

Hello. I use Outlook 2003 as my e-mail client (getting wery tired of it
though).
Since start I have had problems receiving mail, usually it's processing
forever (until time-out error). It seems to hang when receiving pop email
and just sit there forever 'processing'. I have 2 e-mail accounts, usually
it fetches the other and stops at the other, both are affected. If I let it
sit there for some ten minutes it will eventually pull the emails down.
Also, when it hangs like this while processing, I often (but not always)
can't end the program. It looks like its terminated, I start it again and
look if this time it would work. No, I shut it again and so on... Now if I
hit ctrl-alt-del I see several instances of Outlook is running. Often after
I have shut all instances of "OUTLOOK" in the task manager and start it
again it asks if I would want to start in safe mode. I choose "No" and now
it usually works ok, that is it fetches all emails from both accounts ok.
Outlook Express always works ok. I have tried to shut down all other
programs incl. antivirus without any change. I do not have other firewalls
than Windows XP's own built in. My connection is ADSL.
