Outlook 2003 randomly stops send/rec

I having a random problem with Outlook 2003 on a Windows XP Home machine.
Everything works just fine and suddenly when I go to check mail, either by
clicking on the Send/Receive button, or using automatic checking, Outlook
2003 will not work. This happens at least once a day, if not more, and I
can't track any commonalities or steps to make it happen.

If I close Outlook and re-open it, it still doesn't work. About the only way
to get it to send and receive mail again is to shut down and re-start my
machine.

I've searched the newgroups for the last two days looking for something
comparable to use to try to fix this, but haven't been able to find anything
here to help.

Does anyone know why this might be happening and what I can do to fix it?
I've done the automatic updates on all my office software and am running the
most current version.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

I am having the same problem on 2 machines.

Machine 1 is running:
XP Home
Norton Internet security 2005
Outlook 2003

Machine 2 is running:
XP Pro
Norton Internet Security 2005
Outlook 2003

My email will send/receive fine, but at some point, it starts timing out
during send/receive. The only way to be able to send/receive again (that
I've found) is by a reboot which is a pain!
I tried turning off my e-mail security features, and that didn't work. Does
anyone else have another solution?

Often the result of Norton scanning your email, either inbound or outbound.

Some report that one must completely uninstall the Norton suite and
reinstall, explicitly leaving out the email components in order to get it to
stop scanning. Disabling doesn't always work.
