Outlook 2003 shuts down from time to time

I am running XP pro service pack 3 with all current updates. Outlook 2003 has
recently begun to shut down from time to time usually once a day without
there being any obvious trigger for this e.g. this morning I started it up
and just after the usual screen came on, it just disappeared. Other times, I
have been working on something else and then notice it has diappeared. Each
time I start it up again, it does a pst file check which takes a few minutes
( I have a lot of e-mails stored). After that it is usually OK but a couple
of times it has not allowed me to transfer mail from one folder to another
saying I do not have permission. When this happens, I have to close it down
an start up again. Maybe sonmething is getting corrupted.

Can anyone help please ?

Locate and run scanpst.exe on your main data file, with outlook closed.
Have you upgraded from an earlier version of Outlook? if so what is the size
of the data file?
Or within Outlook, properties of Personal Folders, Advanced, what does it
say for Format?
Have you also run Detect/Repair?

DL, thank you for your rapid reply. I tried to run scanpst which detected
errors but hung for ages when making the backup file which eneded up being
6,000 odd KB short of the original pst file which is just over 5gb , so I
abandoned the attempt for the moment. The process took about 2 hours so I am
reluctant to run it again during busy working hours so long as Outlook is
working.

I ran detect and repair which successfully installed but nothing has
happened since and I'm not sure if there is something else I need to do with
it.

I haven't upgraded Outlook. Format says "Personal Folders file".

I shall try scanpst again this evening.

Thak you for your help, I shall let you know how I get on.

Hi, I have now mamanged to run scanpst suceessfully and it made repairs
however the Outlook has just shut down again. At the time of the last
shutdown event viewer shows this warning twice:

A provider, OffProv11, has been registered in the WMI namespace,
Root\MSAPPS11, to use the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged
and the provider may cause a security violation if it does not correctly
impersonate user requests.

Yesteday I also had the following error message but I'm not sure if it
relates to a crash: Rejected Safe Mode action : Microsoft Office Outlook.

Ididn't try to go into safe mode myself.

When Outlook shuts down there is no warning, it just disappears.
