Outlook 2003 SMTP Error

I'm running Outlook 2003 on Windows XP Pro SP3 without an exchange
backend. I can receive e-mails just fine, but I can't send e-mails. I
get an Error 421 SMTP Timeout (abridge error message). It's only
happening on some machines and not others. It started today. Nothing
has changed internally or on the machines that don't send. It's weird
and frustrating.

Does anybody have a solution or a direction to look in?

Not knowing what/who you are using for your SMTP server is going to be tough
to diagnose, but here are some things you can try to isolate the problem.

1) Turn on diagnostic logging. This will generate a log file so you can see
if the workstation is connecting to the mail server and then somewhere
during the session the mail server just stops responding to Outlook.

2) Do you have any security (antivirus?) software installed on the
workstation that can scan outgoing e-mail. Some of these solutions act as a
middleman between Outlook and the mail server, I would try uninstalling the
security software and see if the issue continues. At the very least, you
can reinstall the software w/out e-mail integration.

I use a regular pop3 email hosting provider (hostgator).

I've uninstalled the AV, uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook. I've
deleted profiles. Repaired PST files. Everything under the sun that
I've found online. So far nothing has worked on all the computers.
Deleting the profiles has worked on a couple of the computers, but not
the majority of them.

I'll check the log file.
