Outlook 2003 SMTP Problems

P

Peter Bradshaw

Since installing a Belkin ADSL Router I have been having problems
sending email with Outlook 2003. The Outlook 2003 'Test Account
Settings' works every time.

After working with the link running for some time I get the message:

Task 'smtp server name - Sending and Receiving' reported error
(0x8004210A): 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the
sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message,
contact your server administrator or Internet service provide (ISP).

which is the same as can be found on Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
- 827349 for Outlook 2002. Outgoing message are stuck in my outbox.

The only way to resolve the problem appears to be to power down and
reboot the router.

I know that the problem isnt with my service provider since I have two
different ISP's available for me to send mail through and both have
the same problem.

Since you say the problem started with installing the router I would start
looking there. Either firewall settings could be wrong or a firmware upgrade
might be needed. If you can connect by different means like a telephone
modem you can try to verigy whether the Router is indeed the problem.

You've not said the actual router you got.

The F5D7630uk4A has a problem whereby it cannot handle Clients MTU
higher than its own, the result if they are is you get lost packets
between its and yours. Its own is set to 1454 so the solution is to
set the MTU lower or equal to 1454.
I used tweakmaster. Belkin advise me that they will be producing a
firmware fix early January to resolve.

This thread goes into more detail regarding the problem
