Outlook 2003/Vista SP1 send/receive not responding

When I press send/receive on my Outlook, I get no response (although contacts
and calendar and other fucntions seem to work). Manual tools>send/receive
does not work either. I've run Detect and Repair, which tells me all is ok
but the problem persists about 50% of the time.
I have this problem on both laptop and new dell, both preinstalled with
Vista Ultimate sp1 where I installed my Outlook 2003 (Office SP3, automatic
updates and all).
There is one work-around:
1. close Outlook
2. go to Task Manager > Processes
3. find Outlook.exe and "end" it
4. restart outlook, and everything works fine until next time it stops
responding when you press send/receive.

Occasionally, I get a message: "MS Outlook has stopped working".

Any ideas? Just in case, I use Sophos as an anti-virus program. And mu
outlook accounts are all POP3.

If you close outlook, then after a short period the process is still running
in task manager processes, then something is compromising your Outlook
installation.
What addins / comms are installed?

add-ins? I don't know what these mean. I do have google desktop, google
calendar, but they were there in xp2, and i had no such problems.
but thanks for looking into the matter.
