Outlook 2003

Several problems I can't solve. Can you help?

1--How can I disable "receive mail" on a given mail account (as when the
server is having problems)?

2--Where are attachments stored? How can I edit and save the edits in an
attachment?

3--I have a gray "Date" box above the items in my Inbox. I can't get rid of
it. How?

4--I lost the list of 10 most recent folders that comes up when I click the
"Move to Folder"button. How do I get it back?

Thanks to everyone.

1--How can I disable "receive mail" on a given mail account (as when the
server is having problems)?

Press Alt-Ctrl-S. Select your Send/Receive Group and click Edit. Select
the account, and remove the check in the box labeled "Receive mail items".
2--Where are attachments stored? How can I edit and save the edits in an
attachment?

Until you open an attachment, it's contained in the message in Outlook's
data store (PST or mailbox). If you open an attachment, it's written to
your hard drive in the Outlook Secure Temp folder. See
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/securetemp.htm . In my opinion, you should
never edit an attachment by opening it in Outlook and then saving it.
Instead, save it to disk and edit it. If you need it reattached to the
message, open the message, click Edit>Edit Message, remove the attachment,
then drag the changed file to the message. Close and click Yes when asked
if you want to save.
3--I have a gray "Date" box above the items in my Inbox. I can't get rid
of
it. How?

Where above the items? As a column in the header line? If you right-click
on that box, do you see anything?
4--I lost the list of 10 most recent folders that comes up when I click
the
"Move to Folder"button. How do I get it back?

Since that's a key in the registry, something you did just before it was
"lost" must have cleared that key and there's no way to get it back unless
you have a registry backup from which you can restore it. If you move to a
folder, as you select the folders, the key should start to rebuild until it
contains ten items again.

Dear Brian,

Thanks for your help. I need more assistance with No. 4. The list has
never reappeared when I click Move to Folder. I'm not worried about the
contents of the list I lost, just about getting back the functionality of
having a list at all. When I click the "Move to folder" button, all I get is
the tree with all of my mail folders, with no trace of the former area above
the folders which listed the most recent transfer targets. Any further
ideas? Thanks for your thoughts.

Since the MRU (most recently used) list you lack is kept in the mail profile
and since it is not being retained as you select folders, it appears your
mail profile has a problem and creating a new mail profile using the Mail
applet in Control Panel should correct the problem. You can connect that
new profile with your existing Outlook data store to retain all of your
messages, contacts, calendar, etc. See this on how to create that new
profile: http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm

Dear Brian,

Thanks for your help, but I recreated a profile and it didn't solve my
problem. Any other ideas?

Best,
Dick
