Outlook 2003

I am wondering why my wife's HP Laptop with an AMD Touron chipset runs slow
when she tries to delete emails from outlook. I observed the computer's
performance with the task manager resource meter and have noticed that when
she deletes email, the CPU usage spikes to 100% which appears to be causing
the computer to become unresponsive. Given enough time the computer
sometimes returns to normal when the email is finally deleted or stays
unresponsive. I don't have this problem with my older HP laptop. What is
likely causing Outlook 2003 to do this?

Since you didn't mention what operating system is involved in the equation,
the first and formost things to check are:

1) Security software like antivirus that does real-time scanning of files.
I would exclude the program from being able to scan the .PST file type.

2) Does she have any third party applications that integrate with Outlook.
(These would be addins that *might* be listed under Tools > Options > Other
tab > Advanced Options > Addin Manager and/or COM Addins.
