Outlook 2007 Categorizing Occurence of Recurring Appointment

After converting to Outlook 2007, I discovered that I cannot change
the category for a single occurrence of recurring appointments. I can
only change categories for the entire series.

Is there a way around this?

only by breaking the recurring appointment into individual appointments.

To be fair, that is not a new feature of Outlook 2007.
