Outlook 2007 + DLL's

After using Office 2007 Beta 2 for two months and loving it, I made the
mistake of installing the B2TR release. None of the Office applications
would open. I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling the B2 then the
TR. No luck. So I uninstalled everything again with the intention of going
back to my trusty Office 2003--I realize 2007 is beta and things happen. All
of the Office 2003 apps work fine except for Outlook. I get an error message
"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong
version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software.
Please reinstall Outlook."

I ran "detect and repair" for Office 2003, but the same error persisted.
Then I uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled it from the disks. I still
get the same error.

I ran a search on MAPI32.DLL and found four versions on my system. They are
all in the C:\MSOCache directory. I have two copies of MSMAPI32.DLL, one of
OLMAPI32.DLL and one MAPI32.DLL. Following the DLL extension, they all have
numbers. For example, one is DLL_0002_1033.

Any clever thoughts on what I can do to get Outlook 2003 working again?
Should I blow all the MAPI32 files away or will that really hose me? I'm
stumped.

Appreciate in advance any suggestions.

G'Day Tom,

I fixed this on my PC - damned if I can remember for sure how I managed it!

Focus on MAPI32.DLL (not OLMAPI32.DLL).

I think:
I found a copy in ...
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033
.... and renamed it to MAPI32.OLD....

It either fixed the problem immediately, or after the next detect & repair.

Good Luck.

Pat:
Many thanks for the idea. While renaming that particular file didn't help,
you got me thinking. I later went through and renamed all the mapi32.dll's I
could find--and a few msmapi32.dll's--to *.old, ran detect and repair again,
and this time it fixed it.

Again, thanks for the great idea!

I had a similar problem. After the massive new XP updates and patches, which
were released this week, my computer reverted to 2003 (The updates included a
number of 2003 Office updates).

I tried a number of fixes, repair runs, etc. At one point I tried to
reinstall 2007, and found the latest refresh (BTR2?) that I'd downloaded
couldn't find anything to refresh. When I went to download a new one it just
wanted to replace the previously downloaded one. I admit I didn't look to see
if the size, etc., was the same. I could find no where download the original
Beta 2.

Anyway, I ended up uninstalling both Office 2003 and 2007 and re-installing
Office 2003. Thank goodness, it found all my messages, contacts, etc. (I have
a fairly recent back up). At this point, I'm going to stick to 2003, although
I liked 2007 and will probably buy it after it's been out a while ...

If I'm feeling brave, I may check to see if the new BTR2(?) file is a
complete version in a week or so.

I had the same problem and solved by doing the following:

1.Remove fix KB923095 via Add/Remove in Control Panel
2.Remove Beta 2 from system
3. Install Original Beta 2
4.Install B2TR
