Outlook 2007 & Exchange Settings

If this isn't a case of irony I don't know what is.
I got Apple Mail and iCal working just fine with my universities
Microsoft Exchange server.
But for some reason I can't get Outlook working.

I enter the same account information from Apple Mail on the other
machine.
Even IMAP is a pain to configure.
One problem I noticed right off the bat with IMAP, SSL ports don't
change when I set it to SSL. on Apple Mail when I set the in/out
servers to SSL the ports automatically change. In Outlook, the incoming
port changed but not the outgoing. Was it simply too much to ask
Microsoft to add one more line of code? So I have to look up the IMAP's
outgoing SSl port, enter it manually and go on my way.

Back to Exchange.
I quadruple checked the settings. Apple Mail works, but Outlook?

Is Microsoft even trying? Can't the boys working on Office walk down
the hall to the kids working on Exchange and maybe set up their
respective apps so they work with each other easily?
Its pretty sad when an Apple product works better with a Microsoft
product than two Microsoft products.

In Windows 7 when I go under Control Panel -> Mail (32 bit) Microsoft
Exchange settings, I enter the Exchange server mxr1.myuniversityname.edu
and then my username.
I hit Check names and... nothing. "Verify you are connected to the
network, and are using the proper settings...."
Wow. Just wow.

Yes, I have two email accounts, one is IMAP the other is the university
only Exchange account.
