Outlook 2007 .exe is still running after Exit from Outlook

I've been running Outlook 2007 for several weeks without any problems. When
I exit from Outlook and then try to reopen nothing happens. I open task
manager and Outlook.exe is listed as one of the active processes but Outlook
is not listed under the Applications tab.

I've monitored with Task Manager open all the time and Outlook.exe remains
listed as process after is no longer listed as an active location. The
Outlook.exe process then continues to increase it's VM Size and I seen it get
to over 1M. To stop, I select the Outlook.exe process and then the End
Process button. This problem seemed to start shortly after I installed a
series Windows and Office Updates on 2/13 and 2/14. Any ideas about what's
causing this? Thanks, Gary.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.
