I just hit what appears to be this problem - infinite loop, a few days after I managed to get my old iPaq syncing...
Nightmare!
How do you fix it?

Recent experience I had with this bug seems to point to the Vista synchronisation with Windows Mobile PDA's. I noticed this problem came after I installed my old HP iPaq PDA on my Vista PC. The sync process (works badly by the way) seems to corrupt the contacts as mentioned in the other parts of this thread.
