Outlook 2007 is mind-bogglingly slow. Where is the service pack?

I've "upgraded" from 2003 and it's extremely frustrating. I have about 10000
emails, most of them in the deleted folder, with between 10-30 in my Inbox at
any given time. Any time I start Outlook the disk starts thrashing wildly and
my laptop is effectively frozen. This typically lasts 30-45 seconds. Then for
the next 10-15 minutes the disk utilization is still really high before
things seem to settle down. What's going on here? I spend 99.9% of my time in
my Inbox. Surely all this IO is not needed for this small set of data.
Outlook peaks at about 150mb of memory (out of 2GB). This is not great but
the disk IO is a real problem.

I've seen some threads here about hacking this file and tweaking this
setting, this is BS, my company pays a lot of money for software like this
and besides this isn't Linux where I'm supposed to do a bunch of obscure crap
before things start working. Where is the Hotfix / Service Pack that makes
Outlook 2007 behave sensibly?
