Outlook 2007 not displaying all new mail

I review all my mail on my mail server, deleting spam and other unwanted mail
before downloading the rest. So I know exactly what I'm expecting to see
arrive in my Outlook Inbox.
However, though I see the progress of the download being reported, and the
right number of new messages being received, the new mail is not reliably
displayed in my Inbox. Generally all of it; occasionally none; at other
times just some of it.
It's not in my Junk folder and there are no rules in operation.
If I search my Inbox, using (say) the name of a particular sender whose name
I recognised when I viewed the mail on the server, the "missing" mail from
that sender displays in the search results, but when I revert to Inbox view,
it's gone again and no re-sorting of the Inbox by sender or other attribute
will display it.
The missing mail then sometimes(?) shows up in my Inbox an hour or so later,
or maybe the next day. It may eventually all appear quite reliably - I
simply can't be sure. My concern is that it doesn't appear IMMEDIATELY,
because I risk not dealing with an urgent message in timely fashion. And I
also risk NEVER spotting its arrival at all, because it will be displayed
somehwere down the list, and maybe out of view, in an Inbox generally sorted
with most recent arrivals at the top.
