Outlook 2007 Not Responding

After about a year of no problems, Outlook 2007 opens but does not respond
(freezes). This only happens when it is the first program I open after the
computer had been shut down. No problem if I for instance first open an Adobe
program. When it freezes and I try to close it down with the "X", I get the
message:

"Microsoft Office is not responding. If you restart or close the program, it
will try to recover your information." I then get the options: "Restart the
Program, Close the Program, Wait for the Program to Respond." When I select
"Close the Program," I get the message:

"Microsoft Office Outlook is trying to recover your information which may
take a while." It doesn't take long and the message window disappears and the
program closes back to my desktop.

I then usually restart the computer and try to open Outlook again, at which
point I get the message:

"Outlook has detected a problem with the existing NormalEmail.dotn. Would
you like to create a new NormalEmail.dotn?" I select "yes," and Outlook opens
and operates with no problem.

How can I correct the problem of Outlook 2007 not responding unless first\I
open another program?
