Outlook 2007 problem

I ran into the problem that Outlook 2007 would not open (Vista). I ran
scanpst and it repaired the file but then Outlook would not open at all. I
created a new profile but of couse, all my saved email, addresses, etc. are
gone.

How do I copy the back up pst to my new email account? Please help, I'm
pretty distraught that this happened at all on a new computer and need pretty
detailed help.

Creating a new profile does nothing to your data. It is perfectly intact.
Just open and use the data file you were using before.

Ah, Russ, the old pst file will not open thanks to that great nasty software
scanpst.exe that "repaired" it, I believe. And, what's really weird, when I
opened Outlook 2007 today w/ my "new" profile, I got that error that many
have talked about here before i.e., saying there are errors etc., run that
nasty tool.

I Xed out of it and was able to download mail but I really need to be able
to get my old data. Does anyone have clear and concise (read blonde here)
instructions on how to get that old data into my Outlook?

You are leaving out far too much of the story here. You said you had a
problem with your profile and created a new one. You did not say you had a
problem with your PST file.
Suggest you post full and accurate detail. Scanpst.exe does not corrupt PST
files. It repairs them.
So do you have a backup PST or not?

Thank you, Russ but herein lies my problem. I have a 2.85 gig outlook.pst
file that will not open thru File > Outlook Data File....

I have renamed it and tried to open it with the same above procedure - no
go. THAT is the file I used the evil scanpst file on which *supposedly*
repaired it. Every time I try to use the above procedure on that file I get
the error message others have reported ... i.e., use the inbox repair tool
scanpst.exe tool which I have done twice and scanpst.exe reports there are NO
errors in that file.

That is the file that has ALL my work related life in it. THAT is the file
that I must somehow recover.

Does anyone have any other ideas for me before I book my flight to Redmond
and have a sitdown w/ Mr. Gates?

Thanks for any ideas and help. I realize I sound terse and angry and I am,
not at you people but the fact that I *did* the procedure that my computer
recommended and it made a bad problem worse.

help you? Every single post has contained another crucial bit of information
that changes the solution entirely.
If you had a PST file that has exceeded its size limits, that should have
been the first thing you mentioned, not the last, and the first thing you
addressed.

First of all, I had NO idea that there was a SIZE limit on PST files. I've
just learned that now from reading through these forums. Who would know that
information unless you have come here and continually read these forums?

After posting my first post, I started digging into these forums and started
to realize that the size of the pst file *MIGHT* be the problem. Probably it
is and now I have to address that. But, if I knew what I know now, I would
NOT have run scanpst.exe first (which was recommended by my computer and
folks here). I could have probably saved alot of my important email by
copying it out BEFORE I ran that tool. Mea cupla.

What more do you need? Outlook would not open. Same error as others .. run
the inbox repair i.e., scanpst.exe. ok, that didn't work. Created a new
profile. Trying to get the old info back somehow.

Now, you have kindly shown me a tool that I can d/l and try to repair my pst
file, which I will try and do, thank you. I'll let you know if it works just
because I'm a dog with a bone about this kind of stuff ... I'm NOT a computer
expert.

But, for all others out there, please be careful BEFORE you run that often
touted scanpst tool .. try and save what you can first because it will
"repair" you right out of business.

Yes it would, Russ (I believe). The basic end user gets the message to use
the Inbox Repair tool first thing - it's on that error message - which if you
want I can copy from other people's messages here. So, the basic end user
dolt such as myself goes and does that and it repairs it and boogers up the
file. Basic end user dolt such starts chewing off fingernails and starts
looking around to see what to do because basic end user dolt has never heard
that one should not have a 2 gig pst file hanging around.

2007 can go to 20gb at least" ... doesn't this mean that Vista/Office 2007
Outlook should be able to handle a pst file that is larger than 2 gigs? I'm
truly confused on this now.

BTW, I ran the Exchange 2000 Tool: PST2GB and it ate up some of my pst file
and am now running evil wicked scanpst <g>, on it now ... if that doesn't
work, I will definitely need martini's delivered to actually go and play w/ a
hex editor .....

The Inbox Repair Tool did not cause the problem. Having a PST file that
exceeds 2G is what caused the problem. Actually very few users ever approach
a file of that size with normal use of Outlook.
It is not the Outlook version that matters here, it is the format of the PST
file. This file had been created in an earlier version of Outlook (ANSI
format), so it still has the 2G limit no matter which version of Outlook you
use to open it. Only UNICODE PST files can support a size above 2G.

Yes it would, Russ (I believe). The basic end user gets the message to
use
the Inbox Repair tool first thing - it's on that error message - which if
you
want I can copy from other people's messages here. So, the basic end user
dolt such as myself goes and does that and it repairs it and boogers up
the
file. Basic end user dolt such starts chewing off fingernails and starts
looking around to see what to do because basic end user dolt has never
heard
that one should not have a 2 gig pst file hanging around.

You are absolutely correct that having a too large pst file caused the
original problem. BUT there was no indication that indeed was the problem.
All that happened was Outlook would not start and the message "run the
scanpst" was indicated to be the answer. Now, why couldn't Microsoft in
their infinte wisdom cook up an error message like, "hey, fool, you have too
much junque in your mailbox, delete a whole bunch and we won't blow up your
mailbox!"?

I'm now on my 4th repair of my pst file ... it is well below the 2 gig mark
when it's done. Let's home when I go to File - Open - Data File that
something is there ....

I'm not sure that "Microsoft" and "wisdom" belong in the same sentence. But
to be fair, it is nearly impossible to anticipate every problem an end user
might get into and develop a custom error message for just their problem. As
I said, few end users manage to approach that limit, and those that do have
used Outlook long enough to have discovered that that limitation exists in
time to avoid it. For years we had requested that Outlook have a warning
appear whenever a PST file approached 1.5G (the actual limit when problems
start to occur), but apparently the amount of code that would permit that
feature was prohibitive.

Well, I wish they would've done it before Madame Dolt discovered this
problem. You've got people who work w/ corporate video and graphics and that
does chew up alot of space.

OK, this is where I am now in this adventure:

The file is down to 1.93 .. and when I go to File - Open - Outlook Data file
then the new pst file this is the error I get:

Errors have been detected in the file c:\users\ bark bark bark \
oldpst1.pst. Quit Outlook and then use the Inbox repair tool to fix..........

Is it toast? Is there other (not so expensive as I saw on that website you
sent previously) software that might somehow repair this file?

Should I just shoot myself?

Outlook 2002, 2003 and 2007 are _supposed_ to tell you if you exceed the
size limits of the PST. I don't know why you weren't notified.

That's what the WarnFileSize registry entry is supposed to do and

That file size is still too large. If I were you I'd try to get it down
below 1.6, then use the IRT.

I too am having this same problem, however my file is not as large. I am
using the trail small business version ( not Vista) and can not get into my
email. I ran the inbox repair tool because I couldn't erase any of the
messages in my delete folder. Now I can't open outlook. I ran the repair
twice. I don't know how to start Outlook using a different pst file. Please
help.
