Outlook 2007 sends strange message w/ "???"

My cousin has Outlook 2007, and has reported that starting about a
year ago, when they respond to a message, the sender gets a message
consisting solely of "???" in the body, and then the sender thinks
they have done something wrong. They are truly "???" without the
quotes. Her daughter says their Out-of-office must be turned
on....wrong, it's never on.

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

What type of account?

This is a home comcast account, so presumably POP.

Your cousin should check what encoding is being specified for the messages.
Tools>Options>Mail Format>International Options.

I forgot to mention that the message with the ??? in it is NOT
anything they sent or replied to, it fires off automatically on their
system upon arrival. Later on, when they actually reply, it's normal.

As far as I know, there aren't any kinds of notifications that go out
upon receipt if the SENDER didn't ask for one, right? I'm using
Eudora, as it happens, and I don't have receipts turned on at all.
They also report EVERYONE gets this strange message.
