Outlook 2011 compatibility + AppleScript

G

Gerald Wilson

While I look forward to the new Outlook to replace Entourage, I worry
about compatibility.

Will it be able to migrate seamlessly from Entourage, retaining
folders, accounts, and rules?

Also, what about existing AppleScripts? Will they retain the same
syntax so that only the name need be changed, as it were?

If not, how do we make this suggestion (emphasize the importance of
this) to the development team?

Thanks.

Hi Gerald,

there aren't a lot of details available on Outlook and what it will be
like. The following answers are therefore only speculative.
Will it be able to migrate seamlessly from Entourage, retaining folders,
accounts, and rules?

I should think so. If it can import PST files from the Windows version
of Outlook, it should be able to import databases from the very
application which it is designed to replace.
Also, what about existing AppleScripts? Will they retain the same syntax
so that only the name need be changed, as it were?

At this early stage, with only a scarce amount of information, it is
impossible to answer that question. If the source code of Outlook is
entirely different from the one of Entourage, then all the scripts need
to be rewritten. If it is not, some modifications will have to be made.
If not, how do we make this suggestion (emphasize the importance of
this) to the development team?

The best solution would be to use the feedback mechanism in Entourage
(Help>Send Feedback about Entourage). Or, if you are in the vicinity of
the Macworld Expo, drop by the Microsoft booth and talk to one of the
Microsoft employees.
