Outlook 97 is installed on what operating system and is there a desktop
firewall installed? The reason that I ask is if there is a desktop firewall
on and the user only notices new items show when switching folders, then the
cause is that the desktop is not receiving a UDP packet from the Exchange
server. This UDP packet travels on an arbitrary port > 1023 and can't be
locked to any specific port.

Sorry for not being more clear.

outlook 97 is installed on XP_SP2. On other XP machines running SP1
everything is working just fine.
So I guess you are right. the desktop firewall (part of SP2) seems to cause
this problem.
I will try to find a solution.
Thank you very much for your answer.

You will need to shut the built-in firewall off or define an exception for
outlook.exe.

Thanks, I already found those "solutions"

Defining an exception for outlook.exe works but only half.
The e-mail notification is delivered to the user's mailbox, but the mail is
not forwarded to the personal folder. Arrggghhh

Disabling the firewall, "solves" the problem. Arrggghhh

I am still investigating the option to switch from polling the exchange 2000
server using UDP to RPC. I do not know if this will be a real solution.

Thanks again

FWIW, you will not find any helpful solutions for Outlook 97 since it is no
longer supported and really isn't compatible with Windows XP. (WinXP
developed way after Office/Outlook 97 and its (winxp) security model is
something that can break features in Office/Outlook 97 when working with
restricted user accounts.)

Ideally you would want to upgrade your users to a later version of
Office/Outlook. If working with Windows XP, Office 2003 is a terrific
upgrade from Office/Outlook 97.

Out of curiosity, why is the default delivery location a PST and not the
Exchange mailbox?

ps - i will save you time, all versions of outlook register for a udp
notification event and this can't be changed. only outlook 2003 will let
you assign a fixed udp port. (outlook 2000 and newer can be configured to
poll the server rather than rely on that udp event.)

To answer your question:
E-mail is delivered to the personal folder of the user. This way I can keep
my mail server, which is a very small PC, clean and tidy. No growth in the
store.
In case of serious trouble I can take another small machine and restore
everything in a minute or so. Backup and restore are a breeze, this way.
Our E-mail mimics regular mail (i.e. USPS, TPG). These services deliver your
mail in your personal mailbox, without keeping copies in a central
hub(server). Our company threats e-mail as regular mail. Maybe this is not
the best way to threat e-mail, but it has been working flawless since
Exchange 5.0.

Thanks for the time saver!:)

I want to upgrade to outlook/office 2003, but at the moment I am simply not
able to free the required funds. Other prioritys.
