Outlook 98 doesn't check mail in XP

I have Outlook 98 running on XP Professional on an
Exchange Server. I've discovered that Outlook won't
check for mail unless I open another e-mail in my in-box,
or in any other way ping the server (excepting hitting
the "Send and Receive" button, which doesn't work at
all). This is definitely an issue with Outlook on my
computer, as e-mails will show up just fine on other
computers that I'm logged into.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this an issue with using
Outlook 98 on XP while accessing an old Exchange server?
