Outlook cannot retrieve Tiscali email

C

cj10jeeper

Hi,

So I've been running Outlook 2007 for months and no issues until suddenly I
cannot retrieve email from my Tiscali ISP, but can from another ISP/webmail
server on the same Outlook account?

If I go direct to Tiscali's email on the internet I can see the emails and
Tiscali technical tell me it is functioning correctly on their side.

When doing a send /retrieve I get the error:

Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Your mailbox is temporarily
unavailable because another email message is being delivered to it or another
aaplication is accesing it. The server responded: -ERR[SYS/TEMP] mailbox is
locked by other server

No message is in the process of incoming
send works fine
condition has been the same for several days
I've rebuilt and checked my mail account settings and confirmed with Tiscali
they are correct
Any ideas as I have no idea where to start on this one and the finger is
pointed to Outlook?

Thanks
Phil

if you don't have another copy of outlook accessing it, ask support to clear
the lock.

Diane,

Thanks for the reply - are you confirming that the problem is likely to lie
at Tiscali not Outlook, given that I have no other copy of Outlook running or
attempting to access the server?

Tiscali seem to be very heavily pointing at it being some sort of problem
that requires a re-install or repair of Outlook and that their system is all
set fine.

Thanks
Phil

You can (and should) try outlook's detect and repair (office diagnostics in
2007) but the lock indicates the mailbox is locked on the server and only
someone with admin access to the server can remove it.

When a client checks pop3, the mailbox is locked so other clients can't
access the mail until the first one is done. The lock is normally removed
when the first one is finished. For whatever reason, it was not and the
server didn't remove the lock after a period of time (usually 10 - 30 min).

If you use an antispam or antivirus app that scans email, it could be the
culprit. It would be the one checking for new mail and setting the lock.

Diagnostics did not reveal anything.

I'll try shutting down my antivirus and spam tools.

If that fails will try on another 'clean' laptop and then back to Tiscali
depending upon the outcome

Diane,
Can I pick your (or others brains) as I'm really stuck here??

I shut down all antivirus and spam and still cannot get the Tiscali email
I changed the Oultlook set up to another Tiscali email address and it pulls
it immediately. Changed it back to the required email address and the server
is again locked

For no reason (as far as I'm aware) the connection suddently sprang to life
and pulled down nearly 300 emails then just as quickly ceased again..

To test I set up a test on a totally different machine on XP instead of
Vista also with Outlook 2007 and it too failed to pull the email, reporting
hte same error

Tiscali advise it's not a problem at their end as I can get into the Tiscali
email by web or through another account - pointing to an Outlook issue

What do I do as logic tells me it cannot be Outlook if it worked OK for
weeks and the problem replicates on a different set up, but I'm not well
informed enough to argue my case furhter with Tiscali, or indeed to I have to
strip off office and reinstall next?

Thanks

Is outlook set to automatically check every xx minutes? Raise it to at least
30 if there are a lot of messages on the server. Otherwise, it should be set
on 10. If Outlook is downloading mail when the next scheduled check kicks
in, it can cause the lockout message because the first attempt still has the
lock on.

If its not outlook locking itself out, try it with OE - it should be
affected by a lock also. That Outlook got in and then got locked out tells
me something is goofy with the mailbox on the server. I've never seen a bad
message cause a lock problem, but if OE can delete the mail from the server
(import it from OE into Outlook), outlook might work ok.

I tried the increase in time to 30 minutes and left it alone for hours, to no

I honestly don't know where the problem lies - I do know often times tech
support will blame software...

OE, or its replacement, windows mail, is installed on all computers - its
really the best way to test the acct.

Yes, if mail gets the locked error, something is locking it and the lock is
not releasing. Do you have anything - like another computer, antispam
application, a blackberry - that could be accessing your email box?

Also - have you told them it says locked - not just that it does not work?
If you contact them by email, paste the error message into the message.
(Double click in it and Ctrl+C to copy the text.)

Diane,

just to close this chapter I went back to Tiscali armed with more certainty
and they identified that a lock from my Blackberry was stopping the email
access by Outlook.

I removed all the Blackberry connections and rebuilt them and sent service
books to the phone and it worked perfectly.

A quick call to Blackberry help team within my mobile provider to understand
better and the best they could offer was that while on international travel
the roaming for email did something to the account.

Saga closed and thanks again for your invaluable help.

I tried the increase in time to 30 minutes and left it alone for hours, to no
avail.

I don't have Outlook Express so cannot try that route.

Now I find that I cannot even get to Tiscali direct with it reporting at
login in that 'Your mailbox is currently locked - please try later'.

I can however access other Tiscali email accounts by either my Outlook or
direct through their web mail host.

Tell me I'm wrong that this is a Tiscali issue and not Outlook?

support will blame software...

OE, or its replacement, windows mail, is installed on all computers - its
really the best way to test the acct.

Diane,
Thanks for your help. I'll get out of your hair now...

I ran up Windows Mail and it reported the same server locked error so I
cannot see it anything to do with Outlook per se, rather Tiscali

Thanks for all your help to date.

Diane,

just to close this chapter I went back to Tiscali armed with more certainty
and they identified that a lock from my Blackberry was stopping the email
access by Outlook.

I have had the same problem with tiscali and getting my emails. But I have just installed windows live email account, setup the tiscali email and it works fine. so I wonder if one of the Microsoft updates have changed something in the server setting. so why not download windows live and give it a try

Really? What's the deal with people responding to 2 year old posts?

Stupid eggheaders. It appears that with the demise of the MS NNTP server, EggHeadcafe has started leaching on other NNTP servers...
