Outlook causes intense disk activity and freezes

About 20 times a day, my hard drive light becomes constantly lit for about 30 seconds. During this time, Outlook does not respond to user input. Other applications are also either very sluggish or completely unresponsive. After 30 seconds or so, the hard drive activity stops and all applications are back to normal. This problem occurs only if Outlook is open

I use Outlook 2002 SP3. My outlook.pst file is 950 Mb. I auto-archive weekly.
