Outlook causing slowdowns

For the last couple of months, every time there's an incoming e-mail, every
other application shows almost to a halt for several minutes. I do regular
disc cleanups and defrags and run McAfee and AdAware scans. My C drive is
nowhere near half full. Any other ideas?
