Outlook Contacts are filed last name first but ...

When I use the "TO" window to find email address from Contacts, it apperas
filed as fisrt name first.. But within Contacts they are all filed as last
name first. I have checked to be sure that Contacts preferences in checked
to file them last name first. But somehow when sending mail it doesn't stay
that way. What can I do to get contacts to show up last name first when
accessing them through the "TO" button in new mail and clicking on outlooks
bar?

Very frustrating.

Method depends on your Outlook version, which you failed to mention.
For some:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

the answer to my problem. "Thank you" is an understatement.
