outlook crash

I downloaded and installed the recommended Windows System updates (XP
Professional) this week. After reboot, my background picture had gone and I
restores it, but then I clicked on Outlook and got a message to say there was
no .pst file.

I carried out a full search of my hard drive but it was not there, tried the
Recycling bin and even used some software that searches for deleted files but
to no avail. I can't find a .bak file with a file name that would relate to
Outlook.

I imported an old .pst from another machine, together with an old address
book so I am up and running but have lost about 100 emails.

Does anyone have any idea what could have happened and whether the old .pst
and .pab are likely to be hiding somewhere?

If you did your search for the pst with Search system folders and Search
hidden files and folders checked, then no, I wouldn't expect they are hiding
anywhere.

I also wouldn't expect a Microsoft patch to delete a pst, either.

No, I wouldn't expect it to cause the problem either, but something was
wrong with it. I couldn't do an automatic update as Windows closed because
it kept giving a system error so I went in and did a manual update. That
seemed to work, but obviously something was not right.

The only thing I can think of is that I recently acquired a patch so that I
could work on Office 2007 documents using Office 2003, and I wonder if one of
the updates conflicted with it.

Oh well, it will remain a mystery!

Many thanks
